Statement Regarding Naviance Legal Notice, April 2026
We are aware that some Corning-Painted Post families have received an email with the subject line “Legal Notice of Class Action Settlement” from Kroll Settlement LLC. The email is a legal notice that the recipient may be part of a class of students impacted by a lawsuit that was filed against PowerSchool (the parent company of Naviance) in August 2023. Naviance, a cloud-based platform owned by PowerSchool, is currently used by Corning-Painted Post Area School District and many other school districts, colleges, and universities nationwide, for post-secondary planning.
The lawsuit focuses on how student data was internally handled and collected by the platform's software, not a security breach. While PowerSchool denies any wrongdoing and maintains they “strictly and proactively” follow student data privacy requirements at the federal and state levels, they have stated that they entered the settlement agreement “to avoid the uncertainty, distraction, and expense” of ongoing litigation. It is important to note that neither Naviance’s or the District’s systems were breached, and no data was stolen or lost to outside parties. This settlement is related to data privacy policies and software settings, not a cyberattack or data breach.
If your child used Naviance between August 2021 and January 2026, they may be eligible for a payment. A total settlement fund of about $17.25 million will be divided among people who submit valid claims. Families must submit a claim by July 27, 2026. The email from Kroll Settlement Administration LLC provides options for parents and guardians to join the claim and receive any payment.
The settlement also requires PowerSchool to implement changes to improve data privacy and delete certain collected data.
