On Friday, October 18th Severn Elementary School kicked off their annual Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) reading initiative. To present the theme of Ninja Readers, Severn partnered with a local business, the USA Masters Academy of Painted Post. USA Masters Academy prepared a dazzling and mesmerizing demonstration of kids’ martial arts. William and Lillian Howles, a former and current Severn student, participated in the demonstration. Severn staff conducted the remainder of the assembly by encouraging students to read 15 minutes a night with an adult in their home to earn incentives throughout the year. Students also learned about tracking their reading progress. Students who read 575 minutes earn a yellow belt, 1150 minutes earn a green belt, 1725 earn a red belt and 2300 minutes will earn a black belt and are considered Severn Ninja readers! Along with earning prizes for making the belt goals, the school has a goal of one million minutes to read by June.
The entire Severn student body will be attending Elmira Gymnastics to run a Ninja Obstacle course to celebrate all of our readers. The assembly was full of excitement, cheers and students eager to make the reading goal.
