A focus on student leadership: The Nicholas A. Rossi Leadership Symposium

The Nicholas A. Rossi Leadership Symposium is an opportunity for elementary student leaders to work with the student leaders from CPP Middle and CPP High School on student leadership development. Organized each year by Severn Elementary Principal John Whaley, students come away with ideas on how to enhance their schools and the school experience of their peers. One example is how to plan and organize events to build school spirit.

Mr. Whaley said, “We are so grateful for this opportunity to work with students from across the district. This was our 8th event, and with last year’s Symposium canceled, it was awesome to have everyone back in-person.” He added, “I would like to thank my colleague, Hugh Gregg Elementary Principal Ann Collins, for her support in leading many of the activities. I also thank our middle and high school students for taking the time to work with our young leaders. Our elementary student leaders are the future leaders of the middle and high schools. The skills, idea sharing and team building from the Symposium creates an invaluable experience for them.”

The Symposium was held Wednesday, October 13 at the Radisson in Corning. Student leaders from all six elementary schools were in attendance. The keynote address was given by Superintendent Michelle Caulfield. She said, "It was an honor to see our student leaders in action. They are thoughtful, kind, humble and our future."

The Symposium is named for the late Nicholas A. Rossi, who was a beloved Principal at Severn Elementary. Mr. Whaley said, "Mr. Rossi believed in developing leadership skills in our youngest students so they can grow into leaders and have a positive impact on our schools and community."
