Hugh Gregg Elementary School Summer Reading Program Supports Family Engagement

Summer reading is a focus at Hugh Gregg Elementary School thanks to the Kids Read Now Program. This program's focus is to drive engagement with students and families. Principal Mrs. Collins said, "Our former kindergarten through fourth graders and current first through fifth graders are all involved in a summer reading program where they selected nine books in April and were mailed to them at the end of May."

All 187 students have received four books of their choice so far and when their grown up logs their book (app, website, text or phone call) they are shipped the next book, up to nine! They have currently shipped us 1164 books. Mrs. Collins said, "We have read 508 books. A total of 122 students have reported at least one book (65%) but there is still time!"

This aligns with their typical summer reading the school has promoted the last couple of years. Mrs. Collins said, "Our ultimate goal, of course, is reading on grade level by the end of third grade. The kids get choice, they get mail, there is a parent involvement piece and there is no cost to families."

Here is the original kick off video of the program.
