Phase 3 Communication: Elementary Level K-5

Dear CPP Elementary School Families:


We hope that this letter finds you doing as well as possible during this difficult time.  We are appreciative of all the support you have shown the district as we have worked to navigate through each phase of the school closure.  Our elementary students have shown a high level of engagement with both online learning and packet work, and we truly value the guidance you have given to your children in order to help keep them connected to school and learning during this pandemic.  


This letter outlines our plan for Phase III of Instruction, May 18 –June 12th.  During Phase I and II, we provided both online and packet-based work as tools to support students as they practice skills, standards and stay engaged in learning.  Phase III will continue with both online and packet materials.  Please choose which tool works best for your child and family and know that you may use both formats, if needed.  Please continue to reach out to us through email, Google Classroom, and phone and remember that we are here to help you each step of the way.  


Phase III: 


Over the last two weeks, our teachers, administrators and the instructional department have collaborated  to determine the learning standards that will be the most important for our students to work on as we close out the school year.  Focusing on these selected standards will be the priority of instruction throughout Phase III.  Student work will be streamlined and targeted as much as possible in order to best address the essential standards.  In both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, your student will have a short assessment (just a few questions) to complete each week, for four weeks total.  The assessment questions will focus on the essential standards.




Grading for the 2019-2020 school year will shift from three marking periods a year to two marking periods (Fall and Spring).  Work completed during Phase I, II and III will provide students the opportunity for improvement only in the second marking period.  The work completed (packet and/or virtual) can only help to improve a student’s grade, as we are asking students to stay engaged, try their best and do what they can during this difficult time.  For those students in grades 3-5, we will continue to provide a grade in our Related Arts areas for the 2nd marking period.  Report cards will be distributed on or around Friday, June 19th.  




Retention is a topic that has frequently been questioned and discussed during the school closure.  Please note that the school closure will not be a reason for any child to be retained.  If retention was a topic you were discussing with your child’s teacher prior to the school closure, you should continue this discussion with the instructional team at your child’s elementary school.  If retention is a topic that you are now considering, please work with your child’s teacher and building principal to begin the conversation.  We are here to support you with your questions and concerns.  


Year End Wrap Up:


We are in the process of developing a plan for closing out the school year.  This includes everything from collecting library books and instruments to next steps in providing an opportunity for families to pick up the personal belongings of their students.  We know that there are still items in school lockers, desks, etc.  In the next few weeks, building principals will be in touch with these next steps via email, newsletters and school messenger. 


Fifth to Sixth Grade Transition:  


We know that this is an important time of year as our fifth graders get ready to transition to Middle School.  Please know that our elementary and middle school administrative teams are working together with teachers at both levels to plan for this transition.  We are working to arrange for transition activities, information and support to be communicated out to you during May, June and over the summer.  These plans will help to ensure that our students are prepared to make a smooth transition to middle school.  During the upcoming month you will be hearing from teachers and principals relative to next steps.


Our number one priority is to support our students and their families the best that we can during this unprecedented time.  Whether it is with academics, social and emotional support or to provide resources and guidance, we are here to help you and your family.  If we don’t have an immediate answer, we will do our best to find one.  Please continue to access our District website:  as we are updating it frequently with information and resources.  


Please continue to reach out to your child’s teacher, building principal and one another for support and answers.  Staying connected is important.  You may also contact me directly with any questions.  We will get through this difficult time.  I know that we are all looking forward to when we are back together at each of our schools.  We miss you!
