As we head toward Veterans Day on Monday, Calvin U. Smith Elementary School held a special event in front of their building Friday, November 8th to honor and thank those who have served. In attendance were Vietnam veterans Mr. Bosket, Mr. Tone, Mr. Hawkins and Mr. Gargano, who are also all members of the Corning VFW. They led the students in the Pledge of Allegiance and a flag raising ceremony. Smith teacher Ms. Bowman explained to the students the meaning of Veterans Day and also had each of the guests detail what branch they served in and a little about their responsibilities. They learned, for example, that Mr. Bosket facilitated rescues by helicopter, and Mr. Gargano was at the helm of a Navy Destroyer.
Teacher Ms. Rosno announced to the group that students, families and staff at Smith also had a gift for the veterans. For five days they collected 166 pounds of candy to donate to the Bath VA and Operation Gratitude. The candy for Operation Gratitude will be included in care packages sent to active duty military serving overseas. Also thank you to 171 Cedar Arts for their candy donation to support the effort at Smith.
Thank you to Calvin U. Smith for organizing today’s event.
