We all know that our children are required to take standardized tests throughout their school careers, but the timing and process for this NYS testing program can be confusing and overwhelming.
The NYS Board of Regents, which oversees education statewide, has recently modified the NYS Testing Program as a result of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), a federal law to improve education for all children. NCLB is designed to hold schools responsible for results, give parents greater choices and promote teaching methods that work. In accordance with NCLB, states are now required to test students in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math every year in grades 3-8, and at least once in high school. Unlike many other states, New York has required students to take standardized tests for a number of years. The Board of Regents has established a set of Learning Standards for all students, from the earliest grades through high school. The testing system is intended to help ensure that all students are meeting those standards as they move through their school years.
