Science in Our Middle Schools

Rigorous, Integrated Instruction

In middle school, students begin to explore Science at a deeper level under the instruction of secondary-level teachers in subjects such as Physical Science, Life Science, Biology, Earth Science and Chemistry. Motivated in part by the implementation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) in our secondary schools, the District has re-ordered the secondary Science offering so students now have two solid years of Biology curriculum to prepare them for the important Living Environment Regents Exam and give them a foundation for deeper learning in 9th grade.

In addition to learning the content of a course, students learn to use basic laboratory equipment safely and efficiently; to make sensible estimates and take accurate measurements; and to make scientifically supported arguments. They are also encouraged to relate classroom content to the real world as they develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students are challenged to consider science as part of a constantly evolving and growing field that is shaped by political, technological, ethical and cultural forces.

Dedicated Faculty Teams

C-PP instructors draw on each other' strengths and share materials using a team approach to teaching. Through IB and other mediums, our faculty routinely receives new training in subject matter and instructional techniques. It is in large part thanks to the dedication of our middle school teachers that the Science curriculum is now sequenced to better prepare students for high school.
