What Your Child Is Learning
With the foundation of phonemic awareness laid in Pre-K and Kindergarten, Reading Street's emphasis shifts to phonics and fluency in first grade.

-
Phonics and Decoding Letters and sounds are the building blocks of language, and first grade is the year when students learn and practice blending sounds to decode words. They also learn various letter combinations and spelling patterns. Students become familiar with the parts of word, such as endings, suffixes and prefixes.
-
Fluency As blending sounds to read words becomes more natural for students, they begin to work on fluency, or, the rate at which they read. They are also practicing reading with a natural speaking cadence and using punctuation as clues to pause or change the expression in their voice.
What Your Child Is Doing
Reading Street uses teaching routines that engage young students and make it easier for them to remember what they learn.
-
- Teachers read to students while teaching about predicting, retelling and recognizing the parts of a story.
- Students learn word patterns, vowel groupings and spelling.
- At classroom centers, children listen, write and draw, plus use art projects and technology to enhance their learning.
What Your Child Is Reading
Reading Street uses literature that children love!
In Grades 1 through 3, the mix is half fiction and half non-fiction.
- The content of the materials supports Science and Social Studies standards.
- Books are listened to or explored during self-selected reading.
- Children bring home books to involve the family in their reading practice.
