Rigor - It's Elementary.

Rigor in teaching and learning is the District's standard for making sure that all students master the fundamental skills they need to proceed with learning and succeed in life. THE most elementary skill needed to enable further learning is reading.

Reading Street and Rigor:

  • High expectations are appropriately challenging for students according to their age, grade level and capability.
  • C-PP teachers have the best tools available for teaching children how to read for fluency and comprehension, use rich vocabulary, and communicate in writing.
  • Prioritized skill instruction emphasizes teaching the right Reading skills at the right level with the right intensity.
  • Regular progress assessment helps teachers respond to individual student needs.
  • The variety of teaching activities used each week benefits students of varying learning styles and captivates students' interest.

Relevance - It's A Natural Motivator.hspace=0

Experts agree that establishing Relevance -- among subjects and between school-based learning and life outside the classroom -- is a key strategy for motivating and engaging students. When students see connections between subjects and between school and life, they are better able to apply academic skills in other settings. The application of skills is viewed as a core requirement for success in today's world.

Reading Street and Relevance:

  • The right mix of literature offers fiction and non-fiction content that children relate to and love to read.
  • Student Reading material teaches Science and Social Studies standards.
  • Each selection provides opportunities for students to dig deeper, learn more and relate stories to their own experience. Questioning and critical thinking are incorporated into weekly learning routines.
  • Online Reading lessons build the new literacies, or, the skills needed to use the Internet and other technologies to locate, evaluate and communicate information.

Relationships - It's About Working Together.

hspace=15Relationships in school, at home and in the community enrich students and create a positive, respectful environment that supports excellence in learning, teaching and leadership.

Reading Street and Relationships:

  • Daily homework sheets, books and the Family Times newsletter go home with students to involve families in extra skill practice.
  • Students can access Reading Street textbooks online from home, giving parents the opportunity to actively support their child's learning. See a demo of the online student edition.
  • Small group activities and partnered Reading exercises give children the valuable experiences of working together and learning from one another.
  • With the tools at hand to address the needs of all of their students, teachers can focus on the whole student, and the student's whole experience.
Rigor + Relevance + Relationships = Educational Excellence
