What Your Child Is Learninghspace=0

In second and third grades, Reading Street focuses instruction on fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

  • Fluency
Students work to consistently improve the rate at which they read. They also practice reading with a natural speaking cadence and using punctuation as clues to pause or change the expression in their voice.
  • Vocabulary
In addition to learning new words and their meanings, students also practice strategies such as context clues and word structure for figuring out meanings they do not know.
  • Comprehension
Students learn strategies for comprehension such as predicting, retelling, picking out the main idea, cause and effect, and author's purpose.

Reading Street uses teaching routines that engage young students and make it easier for them to remember what they learn.

  • The day begins with group discussion and background building for the daily lessons.
  • During Reading groups, students read for fluency. Plus, they question, think about and discuss texts for comprehension.
  • Students participate in various activities to learn spelling, grammar, writing, speaking and listening skills.
  • At classroom centers, children enhance learning through Reading, Writing, Art, Science, Social Studies and Technology.

What Your Child Is Reading

Reading Street uses literature that children love!

  • In grades 1 through 3, the mix is half fiction and half non-fiction.
  • The content of the materials supports Science and Social Studies standards.
  • Some books are read online, others are explored during self-selected reading.
  • Children bring home books to involve the family in their reading practice.
