Imagine constructing and launching your own rocket! That's the stuff that dreams are made of, and it's exactly what some middle school students are doing in an exciting after school program at Corning Free Academy (CFA).
CFA Rocket Club membership is open to any student in the school who is interested - currently there are 25 members. Under the guidance and supervision of Science teachers Mrs. Fraser and Mr. Colunio, participants are introduced to model rockets and learn how they work. Each student has the opportunity to build and launch their own rocket from a prepackaged kit.
The CFA rocketeers met for three times between November and December, 2007, and there are plans to hold a second session in the spring of 2008. This time around, the students will be building their rockets completely from scratch. According to Mr. Culunio, to sum up session one of Rocket Club, I would say this was an incredible experience where the students were able to learn in a new and unfamiliar setting. I am looking forward to session two. Who knows where it will take them next?
