International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (DP)

hspace=0

The Corning-Painted Post Area School District was authorized to offer IB's Diploma Program at East and West High Schools beginning in September 2005. C-PP juniors and seniors can choose to pursue the rigorous IB diploma, or enroll in one or more IB courses to be challenged in a particular subject or subjects. Because IB courses and exams are standardized, most colleges and universities know exactly what a student had to do to achieve certification in an individual IB course or to earn the full IB diploma. For more information, visit C-PP's comprehensive IB Web pages or the International Baccalaureate Web site.

Courses offered  C-PP will offer the following IB HL (Higher Level = two-years) and SL (Standard Level = one year) courses in the 2008-2009 school year:

Language 1: English HL

Second Language: French SL, Spanish SL, Mandarin Chinese Ab Initio*
(*introductory course)

Mathematics: Mathematics SL, Math Studies SL, Mathematics HL

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

Fees  C-PP students are NOT responsible for paying for IB coursework or exams. C-PP pays for necessary IB fees, materials and teacher training. This includes the cost of the IB examinations, which are required for successful course completion.

Teacher requirements  As IB World Schools, East and West High Schools are held to a rigorous standard of teacher training, preparation and planning to ensure IB standards and requirements are met. Diploma Program teachers take advantage of both required and optional professional development opportunities offered regularly by both the District and International Baccalaureate North America (IBNA).

Examinations  Students enrolled in IB courses are required to take the standardized examinations that are prepared, monitored and graded by IBNA. Upholding the IB standards ensures that C-PP grades are consistent with other IB students worldwide. Results in the inaugural rounds of IB testing have been promising, with C-PP students performing on-par or above the world average in most subjects.

College Credit and Process College credit is granted for IB coursework at the discretion of colleges and universities, and students are advised to contact their college of choice for their specific policy on IB. Students who graduate with the full IB diploma are eligible for an average of 30 hours college credit. Students who successfully complete any DP course and earn a passing grade on the final examination will earn a certificate in that course that translates to college credit at many colleges.

While most institutions award credit for a passing grade on the IB HL (Higher Level = two-year course) examinations, some colleges do not recognize the IB SL (Standard Level = one year course) exams for credit. In some cases, students enrolled in an SL or HL class may take an AP exam or enroll in an ACE course to optimize their potential for college credit or consideration. Ask your IB coordinator, guidance counselor or course instructors if this makes sense for you.

IBO maintains a comprehensive database of U.S. colleges and universities and their policies regarding IB. This handy index allows Web users to select specific colleges and read their current IB policy statements.

Quotes/testimonials Several recent C-PP grads have said that IB is what gave them the competitive edge to get into prestigious schools such as Cornell, Syracuse University's Newhouse School and the University of Rochester. The following are statements from recent grads and family members:

  • My IB classes really prepared me for college level work. I am beyond where my peers are. -2007 DP recipient
  • The program taught me to be both an independent and team worker, a skill that is 100% necessary at college. -2007 diploma recipient
  • My daughter didn't get a lot of course credit from her IB coursework, but it made all the difference in her first semester at college. She was better prepared and able to manage her time than her peers.-parent of 2007 DP recipient
  • One of my first assignments at college was one I already had in a DP course - almost verbatim.-2007 DP recipient

  • IB helped in exposing me to college-level work and expectations. -2007 certificate recipient

  • Participation in the IB courses gave me a good foundation for the courses I'm taking now. It's like any Math class - each year builds on the class you took the year before. I was much further ahead than many of my peers, and already familiar with the language and the expectations. -2007 DP recipient

  • I was a little bored in my classes first semester - but that allowed me to participate in extracurricular groups and clubs that I would never have been able to do without my IB experience. -2007 DP recipient
