Getting College Credit for High School Courseshspace=3

Matriculating college students do NOT automatically receive credit for every eligible college-level course they take in high school. It takes time, effort and perseverance. The following step-by-step guide will help you through the process.

  1. Successfully complete the eligible course and exam. To earn the IB diploma, you must satisfy all the requirements of the two-year program. For individual IB and AP courses, you'll need to achieve a sufficient score on the standardized examination for the course. For ACE and SUPA, you must pay appropriate tuition and successfully complete the course.
  2. Decide which colleges you are interested in attending, and review their catalogs to identify all of the requirements for graduation. Then determine which of these requirements might be completely or partially fulfilled by the courses you have already taken.
  3. Communicate directly with the admissions office(s) of your chosen college(s) about requirements and restrictions. Their Web sites are a great starting point, but may not have the whole story. Specifically request to speak with their staff member who handles IB, AP or the pre-earned credit program in question.
  4. Request that scores (IB, AP) or transcripts (SUPA, ACE) be sent to the college or university. As a rule, this cannot happen until final exam scoring is completed, and often takes place in summer after high school graduation. Depending on the program, some request forms are available online. Others will require a hard copy request form. Remember - no one will do this for you! And, don't forget to follow up frequently with both the credit program and your college to be sure the scores and/or transcripts have been transferred.
  5. Matriculate and begin first college semester. It is not uncommon to have to wait until well into your first semester before any credit is applied. Just keep checking!
  6. Remember that the college or university awards your credit or not, according to their policy. Please let your C-PP guidance counselor or IB coordinator know if you were awarded credit so that we can track how our East and West High graduates are doing.
  7. Tell your high school guidance counselor or IB coordinator when your college notifies you of the credits you have been awarded. This keeps C-PP informed about how well our college-level course offerings are meeting the needs of our C-PP graduates.

When in doubt, ask a question or make a call. Check with your school guidance counselor or school IB Coordinators for more information about the credit policy of your chosen college or university.
