What Your Child Is Learning

In the early primary grades -- Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten -- Reading Street emphasizes the introductory pre-literacy skills that give very young students the foundation they will build on to become skillful readers:

  • Print and Print Awareness
Young children make the connection between the printed word and spoken language. They get familiar with books, words and letters.
  • Phonemic and Phonological Awareness
Early primary students hear and say rhyming words. They distinguish words, syllables and sounds. They begin to understand how sounds blend to make words.
  • Phonics and Decoding
Kindergartners begin learning how sounds relate to letters and letters make words. They learn strategies to decode words, while being introduced to common patterns so word parts become more recognizable.

What Your Child Is Doing

Reading Street uses teaching routines that engage young students and make it easier for them to remember what they learn.hspace=0

  • Colorful charts and catchy songs greet children each day as they build background on weekly topics and associated vocabulary words.
  • Teachers read to students while teaching about predicting, retelling and recognizing the parts of a story.
  • Students learn letter sounds, syllables, rhymes and high-frequency words.
  • At classroom centers, children listen, write and draw, plus use arts and crafts to enhance their learning.

What Your Child Is Reading

Reading Street uses literature that children love!

  • In Pre-K and Kindergarten, the mix is 60% fiction and 40% non-fiction.
  • The content of the materials supports Science and Social Studies standards.
  • Books are listened to or explored during self-selected reading.
  • Children bring home books to involve the family in their reading practice.
