All Middle Year Program (MYP) assessments are carried out by the classroom teachers, relying on their professional expertise in making qualitative judgments as they do every day. However, the MYP provides official assessment criteria for each of the eight subject areas and a set of required assessment tasks that must be developed by the classroom teacher. The MYP monitors teachersÂ’ adherence to the assessment criteria on an annual basis to ensure that the MYP standards are being met in all participating schools throughout the world.
The Diploma Program (DP) assessment system is completely aligned with NYS standards and is one of only two variances to the Regents Exams allowed by the State. However, because of the timing of when IB and Regents Exams are offered, most DP students will take the Regents Exams in addition to their IB assessments. That said, assessment in each DP subject, except Visual Arts, is administered through a combination of an IB-designed external exam (approximately 80% of the final grade) and a teacher-designed internal exam (approximately 20% of the final grade). Examinations in the U.S. are given in late May of each year and results are sent to schools and students directly from the International Baccalaureate Organization in July. Exams are sent to trained IB assessors for grading. Typically, the grades are reviewed by three levels of assessors before the final grade is sent. This system provides assurance that the grading process is the same for DP students throughout the world and that all assessors adhere to the IB grading requirements and standards.
