Introduction and Objective of this Communication

It’s been just over a year since the project was approved and in November, 2011, the first major benchmark was achieved: The Board of Education gave final approval to the scope of work that will actually be undertaken, and individual project budgets for each phase of the overall project were approved.

First Steps

The process of getting to this point began immediately after the approval of the capital project by voters. Programming committees were formed which met intensively with our architect, Hunt, through early June. The purpose of this process was to communicate our instructional goals and determine what renovations, reconstruction and additions were needed to help enable us to achieve them. During this same period of time, building and site evaluations were undertaken so that the current state of electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems could be assessed, and site issues better understood. One of the key findings of this process was the realization that the sooner the heating plants at both the East and West buildings were replaced, the better.

As the summer of 2011 began, the District’s construction professionals, in conjunction, with our central office administrative team, began working through the issues and making the decisions needed to best fulfill the expectations for the project, while staying within the approved budget of $97.4 million. At meetings in July and August, 2011, reports were provided to the Board of Education, and the Board had the opportunity to provide input. As the summer ended and school began, our architect resumed meetings, as-needed, with some of the programming committees, to obtain additional feedback. In addition, the Board held a capital construction workshop and our construction professionals provided reports at the September and October Board meetings. The Board’s November action was to authorize undertaking the project with two phases at each school, as well as undertaking the district wide technology work in two phases:

East

The first phase of work was the replacement of the building’s heating plant (boilers). This work was completed over the recent holiday break. The second phase of work will commence in early May, 2012, with foundation work for the addition to the building and related site work, the rest of the work will begin in the fall of 2012 and will be constructed over several phases in order to maintain use of the existing building.

West

As at East, the first phase of work at West was the replacement of the heating plant over break. The main project itself will begin construction in the spring of, 2013.

District Wide Technology

The first phase of work will be re-constructing data closets in all the elementary schools, as well as the construction of a new Network Operating Center [NOC] at West. The elementary school work will be done during the summer 2012, however the NOC work will probably not take place until summer 2013. The second phase of the technology work will be done in conjunction with the general construction projects at East and West in 2013 and 2014.

Updates and Contact Information

Additional updates will be posted here throughout the entire construction schedule of the project.
We are currently in what is known as the "Design Phase" of the the project. Our architects, Hunt Engineers, Architects and Land Surveyors, are now working with internal teams of District teachers and administrators to design the new and renovated spaces that will be utilized in the middle and high schools. This work includes visits to other school districts where Hunt has performed design and construction work, to help our teams form a vision for our own design.January with with a series of meetings with the faculties of both middle and high schools to review the process for next steps in great detail. He also detailed development of Building Planning/Design Teams representing the middle and high school. After the faculty meetings, a general interest meeting was held for those wishing to work on the various committees.

Superintendent Michael Ginalski began the design process by visiting the faculties of the high schools and middle schools in January. After those sessions, an interest meeting was held for anyone on the faculty or staff wishing to be involved in the design process. Planning and Design teams were formed and began their rigorous and important work. The high school team is led by East High School Assistant Principal Michelle Caulfield and West High School Assistant Principal Robin Sheehan. The middle school team is led by CFA Principal Rick Kimble and Northside Blodgett Principal Jeff Marchionda. To-date, meetings with Hunt have been held and tours of neighboring districts have commenced.
