K-Grade 5: Daily Academics

C-PP Instructional teams have worked hard over the past few years to implement new, rigorous and engaging curriculums in core subjects for elementary students. The results have been worth the effort – scores on standardized tests suggest that C-PP elementary students are mastering grade-level knowledge and skills like never before. And the positive changes keep coming as elementary teachers phase in exciting new curriculums for Science and Social Studies, too.  C-PP's curriculum aligns with key standards. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chieft State School Officers (CCSSO). The new learning standards are designed to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant tot he real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success.

A typical day in grades K through 5 includes:

60 Minutes: Mathematics
Two programs support C-PP's Math curriculum. Scott Foreseman's enVision Math ™ is a visually stimulating, technology-rich and problem solving format. Its features help children master Math concepts through textbooks, customized instruction worksheets and interactive learning activities. TERC's Investigations ® is an inquiry-based program that helps students make sense of Math ideas and become mathematical thinkers through workshop-style problem-solving activities. Students develop deeper understanding of Math concepts through exercises that emphasize analytical thinking and problem solving processes. 90 Minutes: English Language Arts
The Scott Foreseman Reading Street program gives teachers a plan and tools for appropriately challenging students needing strategic interventions, students performing on level and those with advanced skills. Reading Street materials also equip our teachers with supporting resources to address the special needs of English Language Learners and students requiring intervention. The Full Option Science System (FOSS) is a hands-on, inquiry-based Science program based on the key premise that the best way to learn Science is by doing. Students are actively engaged in inquiry, investigation, observation, data collection, and analysis and presentation of results. Concepts are covered in modules which are more in-depth and longer in duration than textbooks. More Information:

Response to Intervention (RTI) is a school process used to determine if a student is responding to classroom intruction and progressing as expected.  A federally-mandated program, RTI is designed to provide a student who is struggling with additional instructional support by matching instruction to a student's individual needs through a multi-tier instructional model. RTI focuses on the early prevention of academic difficulty, particularly in the areas of reading and math.

Academic Intervention Service (AIS) is a state-mandated program designed to help students who find learning difficult. Students with needs in particular subjects are usually identified by their scores on state tests. Or, they can be identified as struggling with a specific skill (organization, literacy, comprehension, processing) by teachers in the classroom. AIS teachers work with these students to help them improve.
