The 6th Grade East team at CFA is implementing a year-long arts integration program. The curricular unit is made possible through a grant from The New York State Council on the Arts through the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. The project is designed to authentically integrate the arts into the core curriculum and demonstrate that the arts are a vital avenue to student understanding of higher level thinking skills, resulting in increased student achievement. The curricular unit focuses on multi-step processing including sequencing, organization and written and verbal expression skills. |

Throughout the year, students will participate in the following components of the integrated unit: Ø Work with a photographer to develop personal Photographic Essays on “change” by learning to use digital cameras, edit photos, develop a theme and style and utilizing developmental workbooks; Ø Work with Rockwell Museum of Western Art staff to learn visual thinking strategies; Ø Have their photographs displayed at the Rockwell Museum as part of a professional photographic exhibit; Ø Solve word problems in Math; Ø Perform teacher-facilitated labs in Science; Ø Write document-based questions and analytical essays in Humanities Ø Construct compare-contrast-evaluation essays in Language A (English) The project aligns completely with the IB Middle Years Program curriculum and the New York State learning standards. |
