Guiding Principles:
One of C-PP's most innovative and successful programs, the High School Learning Center (HSLC) at Corning Community College (CCC), opened in January 2003, offering some students a much-needed second chance at success. The HSLC is designed for capable, yet disconnected students through a collaboration among the District, CCC, the local business community and the U.S. Dept. of Education. The resulting program provides participating students with academic classes, paid employment and community service a combination that emphasizes the relevance of what students are being taught while adhering to District and NYS standards.
Eligibility for the HSLC is extended to youth aged 16-19 who live in the District and have attended at least one year at either East or West High School. Candidates must participate in a formal application process, an selection is based on the criteria and space available, as well as the student's demonstrated commitment to making some changes in their learning and lifestyle habits. If accepted, students are expected to earn a Regents Diploma, prepare a plan for the future, and develop the skills to make the plan a reality. They also must make healthy personal choices and be committed to the community in which they live.
